And he said no. His father has a master's in psych, and he didn't get pep talks growing up. Then he says, "I don't think I ever welcomed or needed them, they didn't feel comfortable." What? Why on earth would a parent actively choose not to verbally encourage their kid? It's fucking absurd. It's the same with compliments: they make him feel uncomfortable, and sometimes even manipulated.
